AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY Continued





101. Loosely install the four M6 x 45 mm main control valve body bolts.

Note: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.





102. Loosely install the two M6 x 35 mm main control valve body bolts.

Note: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.





103. Loosely install one M6 x 30 mm main control valve body bolt.

Note: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.





104. Remove the valve body guide pins.





105. Loosely install the sixteen M6 x 40 mm main control valve body bolts.

Note: The main control valve body bolts will be tightened in later steps.





106. Tighten the main control valve body bolts in the sequence shown.





107. Install the manual control valve detent lever spring.
1) Position the manual control valve detent lever spring on the main control valve body.
2) Install the manual control valve detent lever spring bolt.





Note: Perform the following steps only if reverse band servo piston and rod is to be checked.

108. Remove the low/reverse band servo piston and rod from the case.





109. Install the low/reverse band servo piston and rod into the servo bore along with a low/reverse band servo return spring.





110. Install Servo Rod Selecting Gauge SST 49 UN01 016.
1) Install a new low/reverse servo separator plate cover gasket.
2) Tighten the three Servo Rod Selecting Gauge SST 49 UN01 016 screws.





111. Tighten the Servo Rod Selecting Gauge SST 49 UN01 016 adjusting screw.





112. Install Dial Indicator with Bracketry on the transmission case.
1) Position the indicator on the piston pad.
2) Set the dial indicator to zero.





113. Back out the servo gauge adjusting screw until it bottoms out on the tool. Record the distance the servo piston traveled.

Note: If the piston travel in this step is 3-5.6 mm (0.120-0.220 in), it is within specification. If the piston travel is greater than 5.6 mm (0.220 in), use the next longer low/reverse band servo piston and rod. If the piston travel is less than 3 mm (0.120 in), use the next shorter low/reverse band servo piston and rod.





Caution: Make sure the test spring is removed after this step.

114. Use the above procedure to check the piston travel with the newly selected low/reverse band servo piston and rod (if required) to make sure that the piston travel is 3-5.6 mm (0.120-0.220 in). Remove the servo gauge and the low/reverse band servo re urn spring.
1) Grooves are located on low/reverse servo rod. Install select servo and rod assembly.





115. Install the low/reverse band servo cover and low/reverse servo separator plate cover gasket.
1) Position the low/reverse band servo cover and low/reverse servo separator plate cover gasket on the transmission case.
2) Loosely install the low/reverse band servo cover bolts.





116. Tighten the low/reverse band servo cover bolts in the sequence shown.





117. Connect the solenoid electrical connectors.
1) Connect shift solenoids SS1, SS2, SS3 and CCS (4R44E only) or SS4 (5R55E only) electrical connectors.
2) Connect the torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC) electrical connector.
3) Connect the electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid electrical connector.





Caution: Excessive pressure may break the locating pins.

118. Install wiring loom protector and guide.
1) Align the pins in the holes of the solenoid clamps and gently push down.





Caution: Make sure that both oil strainer O-rings are properly installed on the oil strainer prior to installation.

119. Install the oil strainer O-rings.
1) Coat the oil strainer O-rings with ATF.





120. Install the oil strainer.
1) Position oil strainer on the main control valve body.
2) Install bolt.





121. Install Transmission Tester SST 49 UN01 071





122. Perform the static testing engine off procedure; refer to the tester manual (4R44E only).
123. Disconnect Transmission Tester SST 49 UN01 071 (4R44E only).





124. Install the transmission oil pan and transmission oil pan gasket.
1) Loosely install the 18 transmission oil pan bolts.





125. Tighten the transmission oil pan bolts.





126. Remove the transmission from the Bench Mounted Holding Fixture SST 307-003 (T57L-500B) or equivalent and place on a flat surface.





127. Remove the fixture arm of the Bench Mounted Holding Fixture SST 307-003 (T57L-500B) and the Holding Fixture Adapter SST 307-262 (T93T-77000-AH ) or equivalent.





128. Install a new extension housing gasket.

Note: Use petroleum jelly to hold the gasket in place.





129. Install the parking pawl assembly.
1) Install the parking pawl shaft into the extension housing.
2) Install the parking pawl.
3) Install the parking pawl return spring.

Note: The guide cup is press-fit into the extension housing and is not serviced separately.





Caution: Make sure the parking lever actuating rod is correctly seated into the transmission case parking rod guide cup.

130. Install the extension housing.
1) Install the extension housing and extension housing gasket.
2) Install the extension housing screws.
3) Install the extension housing stud.





Caution: The lube hole in the bushing must be aligned with the lube groove in the extension housing.

131. Align lube hole with the lube groove in extension housing. This groove is located at the 3 o'clock position when viewed from the rear.

Note:
^ Install the extension housing bushing only if removed in disassembly.
^ Remove any burrs from the extension housing counterbore.





Caution: Tool will bottom when bushing is in the proper position.

132. Using Extension Housing Bushing Replacer SST 307-065 (T77L-7697-F) or equivalent, install the extension housing bushing.
1) Position Extension Housing Bushing Replacer SST 307065 (T77L-7697-F).
2) Install extension housing bushing.





133. Position new extension housing seal with drain hole in the 6 o'clock position.





134. Using Align Extension Housing Seal Replacer SST 307-038 (T74P-77052-A) or equivalent, install a new extension housing seal.
1) Align Extension Housing Seal Replacer SST 307-038 (T74P-77052-A).
2) Install the extension housing seal.





135. Install the digital transmission range (TR) sensor.
1) Position the digital TR sensor on the transmission.
2) Loosely install the bolts.
3) Rotate the manual lever to the neutral position (two detents rearward).





136. Adjust the digital TR sensor using TR Sensor Alignment Tool SST 49 UN01 086.
1) Install TR Sensor Alignment Tool SST 49 UN01 086.
2) Tighten the bolts.





137. Install the manual control lever.
1) Install the manual control lever.
2) Install the manual control outer lever nut.





138. Install transmission heat shield and nut (5R55E only).





Note: Inspect O-ring for damage. Replace if damaged.

39. Install the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor (5R55E only).
1) Install the OSS sensor.
2) Install the OSS sensor screw.





Caution: The splines of the input shaft are not the same length on both ends. The shaft end with the shorter splines goes into the oil pump.

140. Install the input shaft.





141. Check that the oil pump gear seal ring is seated.
1) Insert Oil Pump Gear O-ring Installer SST 49 UN01 142 into the oil pump drive gear.





Caution:
^ Do not damage the oil pump gear O-ring when installing the torque converter.
^ Make sure the converter hub is fully engaged in the front pump support and gear and rotates freely. Do not damage the hub seal.
^ If the torque converter slides out, the hub seal may be damaged.


142. Lubricate the converter hub with clean transmission fluid.





Warning: The torque converter can fallout if the transmission is tipped.

143. Use Torque Converter Handles SST 307-091 (T81P7902-C) or equivalent to install the torque converter by pushing and rotating.





144. Make sure the torque converter is installed to specification.

Note: Dimension "A" should be 10.23-14.43 mm (0.43-0.56 in).





145. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with grease.





146. Before installing transmission, make sure that the transmission cooling system (line and coolers) have been thoroughly flushed. If contamination cannot be removed or proper flow cannot be obtained, replace cooler(s) and/or lines.
147. Install Torque Converter Holding Tool SST 307-346 (T97T-7902A) on case.
