Disassembly Note1. Inspect the front/overdrive one-way clutch.
^ Temporarily insert the overdrive planetary gear carrier assembly into the center shaft and front/overdrive one-way clutch assembly for verification of the one-way clutch.
^ The planetary gear must rotate counterclockwise and hold when rotated clockwise.
^ Remove the front/overdrive planetary gear carrier assembly.
2. Remove the overdrive center shaft from the front/overdrive ring gear.
1) Remove the front/overdrive center shaft snap ring.
2) Remove the center shaft from the ring gear.
Note: The front/overdrive one-way clutch is serviced with the center shaft assembly.
Caution: Do not remove the front/overdrive one-way clutch. Damage to the clutch may occur if it is removed.
3. Clean and inspect the front/overdrive one-way clutch and center shaft.
1) Inspect the roller cage for cracks.
2) Inspect the roller clutch for wear.
3) Inspect the press fit of the one-way clutch to the center shaft.
4) Inspect the spring and roller cage for bent or damaged spring retainers.
Note: If the inner race of the front/overdrive planetary gear is damaged, the front/overdrive one-way clutch can be replaced. If the center shaft is damaged, the complete front/overdrive one way clutch must be replaced as an assembly.
4. Insert a screwdriver through the holes; remove the front/overdrive one-way clutch from the center shaft.
Caution: Do not score the center shaft bore.
Note: This step only needs to be carried out if there is damage to the bearing.
5. Inspect the center shaft bore for damage. If the outer race of the center shaft bore is damaged, the front/overdrive one-way clutch and center shaft must be replaced.
Note: This step only needs to be carried out if there is damage to the bearing.
6. Inspect the one-way clutch.
1) Temporarily insert the front/overdrive planetary gear carrier assembly into the one-way clutch rollers for verification of the one-way clutch.
2) The planetary gear must rotate counterclockwise and hold when rotated clockwise.
3) Remove the planetary gear carrier assembly.
