Assembly Note

Assembly Note

Caution: The lip seals must be positioned as shown. Care must betaken to prevent rollover of the lip seal.

Note: Use new seals to help prevent seal failures.

1. Install the new reverse and high clutch piston inner seal and the reverse and high clutch piston outer seal.

Caution: Lubricate the reverse and high clutch piston inner and outer seals with clean transmission fluid.

2. Install the reverse and high clutch piston into Direct Clutch Outer Seal Sizing Tool SST 49 UN01 141.
1) Press together until seated.
2) Install the reverse and high clutch piston into Direct Clutch Outer Seal Sizing Tool SST 49 UN01 141.

3. Inspect the reverse and high clutch drum and components for the following:
^ Reverse and high clutch band surface for scoring.
^ Clutch piston bore and the piston inner and outer bearing surfaces for scoring.
^ The fluid passages for obstructions. All fluid passages must be clean and free of debris.
^ Inspect the clutch plates for wear, scoring and fit on the clutch hub serrations. Replace all plates that are badly scored, worn or do not fit freely in the hub serrations.
^ Inspect the reverse and high retaining plate for scores on the clutch plate bearing surface. Check the clutch release springs for distortion.
4. Verify that the reverse and high clutch drum check ball is clean and free of debris.

5. Carefully remove the reverse and high clutch piston from Direct Clutch Outer Seal Sizing Tool SST 49 UN01 141.

Caution: Care must betaken to prevent damage to the seals during installation.

6. Install the reverse and high clutch piston.
1) Position the reverse and high clutch piston in the reverse and high clutch drum.
2) Push down evenly around the piston circumference.

7. Install the reverse and high clutch piston spring retainer and the twenty (20) direct clutch piston springs.
1) Install the reverse and high clutch piston springs.
2) Place the reverse and high clutch piston spring retainer on the reverse and high clutch piston springs.

Warning: After removing the snap ring, use care when releasing the pressure on the springs.

Caution: Do not fully compress the SST or damage to the spring retainer may occur.

8. Use Clutch Spring Compressor SST 49 G019 025 to install the reverse and high clutch piston snap ring.
1) Install Clutch Spring Compressor SST 49 G01 9 025 and compress the reverse and high clutch pistons springs.
2) Install the reverse and high clutch piston snap ring.

9. Relieve the reverse and high clutch spring tension and remove the Clutch Spring Compressor SST 49 G019 025.

Caution:
^ The reverse and high clutch friction plates are directional and must be installed with grooves pointing clockwise (I.D. to O.D.) and the word (TOP) facing up.
^ If new plates are used, they should be soaked in clean transmission fluid for at least 30 minutes before assembly.

10. When installing friction plates, the word (TOP) should face up. If reusing plates, grooves must be installed clockwise. Install the direct clutch disc pack.

11. Install the steel clutch plates and friction clutch plates in alternating order starting with a steel clutch plate.

Note: If steel plates are being replaced, make sure to use the correct steel plates. For 5R55E, use 1.71 mm steel plates (5 req'd). For 4R44E, use 2.14 mm steel plates (4 req'd).

Caution: The snap ring is a select fit.

12. Install the reverse and high clutch pressure plate.
1) Install the reverse and high clutch pressure plate.
2) Install the original reverse and high clutch snap ring on the reverse and high clutch disc pack.

Warning: Air pressure must not exceed 138 kPa (20 psi). Wear safety glasses when using compressed air. Make sure the drum is facing down as shown.

13. Check the operation using compressed air.
1) Apply air pressure to the hole in the drum while blocking the other hole with a finger.

Note: The reverse and high clutch piston must apply with air pressure and release when the air is removed.

14. Push down on reverse and high clutch disc pack and check gap between the reverse and high clutch snap ring and the reverse and high clutch pressure plate with a feeler gauge.
1) If specifications do not match, use a select fit reverse and high clutch snap ring to match specifications and verify with a feeler gauge.
