D. Repair Procedure

Replacement procedure for the Connecting Rod of 1982 GLC Cruise Control.

NOTE:
Verify that this campaign has not already been performed on the vehicle by checking for a label sticker on the driver's door. If none is affixed, begin the repair procedure as follows.

FIGURE 1:

1. Remove the air cleaner.

2. Disconnect the connecting rod from the throttle lever by inserting and turning a large flat bladed screw driver between the connecting rod and the throttle lever. (See Figure 1)

Note:
Be sure to use the screw driver with a twisting motion in such a way as to pop off the connecting rod end. DO NOT use in any way that could cause the throttle lever to become bent or damaged. Do not pull by force as this could bend the lever.

3. Once the connecting rod has been detached from the throttle lever, use the same procedure outlined above to detach the connecting rod from the cruise control lever. Discard the connecting rod once detached.

FIGURE 3:

4. Clean the dust on the ball joints of the throttle lever and the cruise control lever.

5. Apply a lubricant with good low temperature characteristics (such as white lithium grease or equivalent) to the seat inside of a new connecting rod and other points as shown in the Figure 2 & 3.
6. Attach the connecting rod to the cruise control lever with a pair of pliers. The goal is to squeeze the two parts together with equal force on both so as to prevent bending the lever.

NOTE:
Be sure to use pliers or equivalent tools to squeeze the parts together. This will prevent the control lever from getting bent or damaged. Do not try to press on from one side only.

FIGURE 3:

7. Attach the connecting rod to the throttle lever following the procedure mentioned in Step 6. (See Figure 3)

8. Operate the cruise control lever fully a few times and check to see that it moves smoothly.

FIGURE 4:

9. Check the freeplay of the accelerator cable and the cruise control cable by checking the amount of deflection in the cables after making sure that the choke is fully open. (See Figure 4)
If the deflection is not within the specifications, adjust the freeplay of the cable(s).

10. Install the air cleaner.

NOTE:
Make sure the hoses and clamps are connected correctly as before.

FIGURE 5:

11. A properly completed campaign label must be affixed to the rear inside end of the driver's door (adjacent to latch) as shown in Figure 5. This will signify the campaign completion. Campaign label is contained in the repair kit.

CRUISE CONTROL RECALL CAMPAIGN

Owner Letter

Dear Mazda Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act Mazda Motor Corporation has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in 1982 Mazda GLC models optionally equipped with a factory approved Mazda cruise control system (a device that automatically maintains a designated cruising speed set by the vehicle driver). This notice is being sent to all owners of 1982 Mazda GLC models that may have been equipped with Mazda's factory approved cruise control system. However, as this system is an equipment option, your GLC may or may not be so equipped. If you are not sure whether this system is installed on your GLC, please consult the Mazda Dealer nearest you. Should your GLC be equipped with the factory approved Mazda cruise control system, you should bring your GLC to any Mazda Dealer for repair free of charge on or after January 24, 1986. Mazda's investigation has shown that the linkage between the connecting rod and the lever of the cruise control system may, in some cases, be too tight due to improper tolerance control during manufacture. This tight linkage can result in heavy accelerator pedal effort and, in extreme cases, a cause the throttle valve to stick in the open position. Sticking is most likely to occur when you try to start the engine. This sticking condition may prevent the engine from starting. However, if sticking were to occur while the vehicle is being driven, it is possible that the vehicle will not slow down after the accelerator pedal has been released. Should this happen, the clutch should be immediately depressed (in the case of manual transmissions) or the transmission should be immediately shifted into the "neutral" setting, (in the case of automatic transmissions) and foot brake should be applied to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. Once stopped, the ignition should be turned off. The repair is accomplished by replacing the connecting rod and will normally require appproximately 20 minutes, but we recommend that you make an appointment with your Mazda Dealer in advance to minimize your inconvenience. If you no longer own your 1982 GLC, please complete the enclosed prepaid postcard ("Change of Ownership") and mail it to us as soon as possible. Any problems encountered in this recall campaign should be discussed with your nearest authorized Mazda Dealer or Mazda Distributor listed in your Owner's Manual. If your Dealer or Distributor does not remedy the defect without charge within a reasonable amount of time, you may wish to notity the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration, Washington, D.C. 20590, or call the hotline telephone number (800) 424-9393 (residents of Washington, D.C., call 426-0123). Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience to you over this matter.
