Air Injection Control Valve: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 1 Checking air control valve:

EXC. WAGON

1. Disconnect vacuum hoses (1) and (2), Fig. 1, from air control valve.
2. Disconnect air hose (A) from air control valve and start engine. Ensure air flows out port (a).
3. Disconnect air hoses (B) and (C) from air control valve. Apply intake manifold vacuum to hose (2). Apply manifold vacuum to hose (1), air should flow only from port (c).
4. Remove vacuum hose (2). Apply manifold vacuum to hose (1), air should flow only from port (c).
5. Connect vacuum and air hoses. Ensure no air flows out port (a) at idle.
6. Increase engine speed to 4000 RPM and ensure air flows from port (a). If no air flow, replace air control valve.

WAGON

1. Disconnect air hose between air pump inlet and air control valve from air control valve.
2- Connect vacuum hoses from No. 1 relief valve diaphragms.
3. Start engine and run at idle.
4. Place finger over air control valve outlet and ensure that air flows out.
5. Using suitable piece of vacuum hose, apply intake manifold vacuum directly to diaphragm of No. 1 relief valve and ensure air does not flow from air control valve outlet
6. Connect all hoses to proper locations.
7. Disconnect outboard lower and inboard upper air hoses from air control valve.
8. Disconnect vacuum hose from No. 1 relief valve diaphragm.
9. Disconnect vacuum hose from air switching valve diaphragm and plug hose.
10. Start engine and run at idle.
11. Using suitable vacuum hose, apply intake manifold vacuum directly to No. 1 relief valve diaphragm.
12. Place finger over open air control valve outlets and ensure air does not flow out
13. Using suitable vacuum hose, apply intake manifold vacuum directly to air switching valve and ensure air flows from outboard lower air control valve outlet
14. Connect all hoses to proper locations.
15. If test results are unsatisfactory, replace air control valve.
