Air Injection System

Air Pump
1. Operate engine until normal operating temperature is obtained. Check all hose fittings for leaks.
2. Check air pump for noise, if excessive, replace air pump.
3. Disconnect air hose from air pump outlet and connect a suitable air pump test gauge to air pump outlet.
4. Connect a suitable tachometer to the engine.
5. For RX-7 models, let engine idle and check air pump gauge reading.

Reed Valve
1. Operate engine until normal operating temperature is obtained and switch engine off.
2. Disconnect air hose from reed valve. Start and operate engine at idle.
3. Position a finger over reed valve inlet and ensure air is sucked into the valve.
4. Increase engine speed to 1,500 RPM and check for exhaust gas leak at air inlet fitting and on reed valve. If exhaust gas is leaking at either the air inlet fitting or reed valve, replace reed valve.

Fig.39 - Testing Three Way Solenoid Valve:

Three Way Solenoid Valve (For No. 1 Relief Valve)
1. Disconnect vacuum hose from three way solenoid valve and from vacuum pipe.
2. Blow air through the solenoid valve from the vacuum hose (B), Fig. 39. Ensure air flows through the solenoid valve and out from the solenoid valve air filter port (A).
3. Disconnect electrical connector and connect battery voltage to electrical connector terminal, Fig. 39. Blow air through the solenoid valve from vacuum hose (B). Ensure air flows through the solenoid valve and out port (a).
4. If air does not flow through port (a), replace solenoid valve.

Fig.40 - Checking Air Switching Valve Solenoid Valve:

Air Switching Valve
1. Disconnect vacuum hoses from three way solenoid valve and vacuum pipe.
2. Blow air through the solenoid valve from vacuum hose (B), Fig. 40. Ensure air flows through the solenoid valve and out from air filter port (A).

Fig.41 - Checking Air Flow Out From Solenoid Valve:

3. Start engine and increase engine speed to 1,200 RPM. Blow air through the solenoid valve from vacuum hose (B). Ensure air flows through solenoid valve and out from port (a), Fig. 41. If no air flow, replace three way solenoid valve.

Fig.42 - Checking Engine Speed Unit:

Engine Speed Unit (Some Applications)
1. Connect a suitable voltmeter to electrical connector terminals as shown in Fig. 42.
2. Slowly increase engine speed and record engine speed at which current begins to flow to the circuit. Engine speed should be 1,200 RPM.
3. Slowly decrease engine speed and record engine speed at which current stops flowing to the circuit. The difference between engine speeds recorded in steps 2 and 3 should be 100-300 RPM. If difference is not within specified limit, replace engine speed unit.

Water Thermo Switch (Some Applications)
1. Disconnect bullet connectors and remove water thermo switch from radiator lower tank.
2. Connect a suitable voltmeter to water thermo switch terminals, then place water thermo switch and a thermometer into a water beaker and heat gradually.
3. Check temperature at which there is no continuity between both terminals. Temperature should be 63° F, (17° C). If temperature is not to specification, replace water thermo switch.
