1. Adjust the radiator mounting by using the radiator mount kit so that the radiator can function more effectively as a vibration damper. This modification has been incorporated into the following vehicles produced on and after February 11, 1983.

Sedan: JM1GC221 D1512870

Hatchback: JM1GC241 D1503600

Coupe: JM1GC311 D1509464

Note: Procedure 1 is not necessary for the vehicles after above VINs. Go to procedure 2.

RADIATOR MOUNT KIT AND ASSEMBLY:

a. Replace the upper and lower brackets and mount rubbers with the kit parts.
b. Install the set plates provided in the kit between the upper bracket and gusset plate.

HOLDING BRACKET WITH WRENCH:

Note: The upper bracket tends to rotate and decrease its clearance when tightening. In order to eliminate the rotation of the upper bracket, it is necessary to hold the bracket as shown when tightening the bolt for the upper bracket. It is also necessary to take above mentioned care when you install the air conditioner kit.

RADIATOR UPPER HOSE:

c. Check the clearance between the radiator and body.

If the radiator is found to be pressed to the body when the upper bracket is removed, move the radiator away from the body by cutting the radiator upper hose 5-10 mm from the end.

RIGHT AND LEFT SPLASH SHIELD:

2. Replace the driveshaft.
a. Remove both right and left driveshafts. Refer to the drive shaft removal procedures in the 1983 626 workshop manual page 8:4 through 8:8.

b. Cut both right and left splash shields as shown to prevent interference with the new driveshaft.

INSULATORS:

c. Install the insulators provided in the kit as shown below.

RIGHT HAND SIDE INSULATOR:

Right Hand Side

Install the right hand side insulator to the engine block using the 3 bolts provided in the kit.

d. Install the new driveshaft provided in the kit. Refer to the driveshaft installation procedure in the 1983 626 workshop manual page 8:13.

NEW TYPE JOINT AND JOINT HOUSING LOCATIONS:

CAUTION: There is no clip for the new type joint at location "A" as shown in the figure below. Do not pull the shaft as this will result in disconnecting the joint. If it is necessary to remove the new type driveshaft, use a screwdriver on the joint housing at location "B" as shown.

3. Check and adjust the idle speed.

a. Warm up the engine until normal operating temperature.
b. Check to see that the idle speed is at 700 rpm in "D" with cooling fan and accessories off. Adjust with the throttle adjust screw, if necessary.
c. Adjust the throttle opener as shown in the 1983 626 workshop manual, page 1A:38 and confirm that the idle speed is maintained to 700 rpm in "D" with the air conditioner compressor engaged.
