Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain transaxle fluid.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
3. Remove clutch cable bracket attaching bolts, then disconnect clutch cable from release lever.
4. Disconnect ground wire and wire harness clip.
5. Remove starter, then install engine support 49 G030 025 or equivalent and attach to engine.
6. Remove 4 transaxle to engine attaching bolts, then raise and support vehicle.
7. Remove front wheels, then the right and left splash shields.
8. Remove stabilizer bar control link.
9. Remove transaxle undercover, then the right and left control arms by pulling arms downward to separate them from knuckles. Use caution to avoid damaging ball joint dust boots.
10. Remove right driveshaft as follows:
a. Pull front hub outward, then install suitable pry bar between hub and transaxle.
b. Tap pry bar until driveshaft disconnects from transaxle side gear.
c. Pull front hub outward, then pull driveshaft out from transaxle and set aside. Use caution not to damage driveshaft oil seal when removing driveshaft from transaxle.
11. Remove right driveshaft as follows:
a. Install suitable pry bar between drive shaft and joint shaft, then tap pry bar until driveshaft coupling opens.
b. Pull front hub outward, then pull driveshaft out from joint shaft and set aside.
c. Remove joint shaft bracket attaching bolts, then pull joint bracket from transaxle as a complete assembly.
12. Remove crossmember and lower control arm attaching bolts, then lower crossmember and lower control arm from vehicle as an assembly.
13. Separate shift control rod from shift rod.
14. Remove extension bar from transaxle, then the transaxle undercover.
15. Attach suitable rope to transaxle mount bracket in two places, then secure rope to engine support.
16. Install suitable jack under transaxle. Note which part of transaxle contacts jack, as transaxle is not well balanced.
17. Remove 2 transaxle to engine attaching bolts, then remove transaxle from vehicle by lowering floor jack and loosening rope at the same time.
18. Remove transaxle mount bracket from transaxle.
19. Reverse procedure to install.
