Oil Pump: Service and Repair


REMOVAL

1. Remove oil pan as previously described.
2. Remove oil pump attaching bolts and the oil pump.

DISASSEMBLY, INSPECTION & ASSEMBLY

1. Remove oil pump cover.
2. Remove cotter pin and plunger assembly.
3. Remove outer rotor.
4. Using suitable tools, press off sprocket.
5. Remove shaft and inner rotor assembly.
6. Check pump body and cover for deformation or damage, the plunger for wear or damage and the plunger spring for weakness or breakage, replacing as necessary.
7. Measure clearance between inner and outer rotors. Clearance should not exceed .01 inch (.25 mm).
8. Check clearance between outer rotor and body. Clearance should not exceed .014 inch (.35 mm).
9. Check clearance between rotor and cover. Clearance should not exceed .006 inch (.15 mm).
10. Check oil strainer for clogging.
11. Reverse disassembly procedure to assemble, noting the following:
a. Using suitable tools, press sprocket on until end surface becomes flush with end surface of shaft. If sprocket can be pressed on with pressure of less than 1540-2860 lbs., replace sprocket and/or shaft.
b. Ensure tally marks on both outer and inner rotor face toward cover side.

INSTALLATION

Reverse removal procedure to install, then fill crankcase, start engine and check for leaks.
