Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove clutch release cylinder.
3. Remove transmission to engine attaching bolts from rear of engine.
4. On models with carbureted engine, remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove gear shift lever knob, boot and boot plate, then the gearshift lever and retainer assembly.
6. Raise and support vehicle.
7. Remove front and rear undercovers.
8. Remove catalytic converter undercover.
9. Disconnect air pipe from catalytic converter and remove converter brackets.
10. Remove rear exhaust pipe and catalytic converter assembly.
11. Remove front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter assembly.
12. Remove floor undercovers.
13. Drain transmission fluid, then clean and reinstall drain plug.
14. Remove driveshaft.
15. Remove starter motor.
16. Remove transmission-to-engine attaching bolts.
17. Disconnect all electrical connectors from transmission, then support transmission with a suitable jack.
18. Disconnect speedometer cable, then remove transmission support-to-body attaching nuts.
19. Slide transmission rearward until main driveshaft clears clutch disc, then carefully lower transmission from vehicle.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
