Disassembly and Assembly
Distributor, Disassemble
1. Remove distributor cap, rotor and seal cover.
2. Remove leading and trailing igniter to distributor housing retaining screws, then the igniters.
3. Disconnect vacuum advance links, then remove vacuum advance unit retaining screws. Remove both vacuum advance units and the condenser.
4. Remove signal rotor shaft and coil base bearing retaining screws.
5. Remove signal rotor shaft, pickup coil and pickup coil base bearing assembly.
6. Using a suitable puller, separate signal rotor from rotor shaft. Remove retaining pin.
7. Remove governor springs, then the governors.
8. Remove driven gear retaining pin, then the gear and washers.
9. Pulling upward, remove distributor shaft through top of distributor housing.
Inspection
Using an ohmmeter, check pickup coil for open or short circuit. Pickup coil resistance for both leading and trailing coils should be 600---700 ohms at 68°F. If not within specifications, replace pickup coil.
Connect an ammeter to pickup coil coupler terminals, then place screwdriver on magnetic core of pickup coil. Separate screwdriver from magnetic core and observe ammeter. The ammeter should jump as contact is broken. If not, replace pickup coil.
Inspect coil base bearing assembly by turning outer race with hand. If roughness is evident, replace bearing assembly.

Distributor, Assemble
Reverse disassembly procedure to assemble. Turn distributor shaft until signal rotor aligns with magnetic core, then measure air gap of both leading and trailing cores of pickup coil, Fig. 10. Air gap should be .020---.035 inch. If air gap is not within specifications, replace pickup coil bearing assembly or the distributor shaft.
