Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Engine speed should be below 4000 RPM while warming up.
2. Connect system checker to control unit check connector, Fig. 5.

3. Ensure system checker is functioning properly. Buzzer should sound for approximately 3 seconds after ignition switch is turned to ``On.'' Observe system checker. If red light does not illuminate, system is functioning properly. If red light illuminates, a problem has been found in system. Refer to Fig. 6 to determine code(s) being displayed and note the following:
a. If there is trouble in more than one place, lowest code number will be displayed first.
b. Even if problem is corrected during indication, 1 cycle will be indicated.
c. If, after a malfunction has occurred, the ignition key is switched off, the malfunction indicator will not be displayed on the checker.
d. The control unit has a built in fail-safe mechanism. If a malfunction occurs during driving, the control unit will operate on its own initiative as shown, and driving performance will be affected.
4. After determining trouble code(s) being displayed, refer to ``TESTING PROCEDURES.''
