Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


323 EXC. 4WD

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Loosen front wheel lug nuts.
4. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
5. Disconnect clutch cable from release lever and remove clutch cable bracket mounting bolts.
6. Remove ground wire attaching bolt.
7. Remove water pipe bracket.
8. Remove secondary air pipe and EGR pipe bracket.
9. Remove wire harness clip.
10. Disconnect Neutral start and back-up light switch electrical connectors.
11. Disconnect body ground electrical connector.
12. Remove two upper transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
13. Position suitable engine support tool onto engine hanger.
14. Raise and support vehicle.
15. Drain fluid from transaxle.
16. Remove front wheels.
17. Remove undercover and side covers.
18. Remove front stabilizer bar.
19. Remove lower control arm ball joints and steering knuckle clinch bolts. Pull lower arms downward, then separate lower arms from steering knuckles. Take care not to damage ball joint dust boots.
20. Separate driveshaft by pulling the front hub outward. Do not use excessive force at once, gradually increase force applied. Use caution to prevent overextending CV joints. Support driveshaft using a suitable piece of wire or string.
21. Remove crossmember attaching bolts, then the crossmember.
22. Separate shift control rod from transaxle.
23. Remove extension bar from transaxle.
24. Disconnect starter positive cable from start motor, then remove starter motor.
25. Remove end plate.
26. Gradually lean engine assembly toward transaxle to lower transaxle assembly by loosening engine support hook bolt.
27. Support transaxle with a suitable jack.
28. Remove No. 2 engine bracket.
29. Remove remaining transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
30. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
31. Reverse procedure to install.




323 W/4WD

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable at center point.
3. Remove clutch release cylinder.
4. Disconnect transmission electrical connectors, body ground and transmission control cable.
5. Mount tool 49B0175A0 or equivalent to engine hanger.
6. Remove mount bracket No. 4, then the front wheel assemblies.
7. Remove side and under covers, then disconnect propeller shaft.
8. Remove oil filter, differential lock assembly, starter and stabilizer.
9. Remove tie rod ends and lower arms.
10. Remove jointshaft and driveshaft.
11. Install tool 49B027001 or equivalent to hold side gear.
12. Remove end plate bolts.
13. Remove crossmember.
14. Using engine hoist, remove transaxle and transfer carrier.
15. Reverse procedure to install.
