Exhaust Temperature Sensor: Testing and Inspection

WARNING SYSTEM INSPECTION

Heat Hazard Warning Light:

1. Heat hazard warning lamp should light when ignition is switched "ON."
2. When engine is started, light should go out.

Heat Hazard Sensor:

3. To check bulb and wiring, unplug sensor connector beneath passenger seat and floor mat.
4. Install a jumper wire between connector terminals (vehicle harness side). With ignition "ON," warning lamp should light.
5. If not, check connector, wiring and bulb. Repair as needed.

Heat Hazard Sensor Testing:

SENSOR TESTING
1. Remove sensor from beneath passenger side seat and floor mat.
2. Wrap sensor and a thermometer in aluminum foil and place in a heat resistant container of oil. Ensure that foil is carefully sealed to prevent oil from entering.
3. Connect a test lamp and battery to sensor connector terminals.
4. Gradually heat oil. Test lamp should light when temperature within the foil reaches 221 - 239°F (105 - 115°C). Do not heat oil above 302°F (150°C).
5. Replace sensor if it does not operate as specified.
