Cluster Switch - Replacement Update

87mazda04

Category Applicable Model/s Subject Bulletin No.. 054/87
15 1986 RX-7 CLUSTER SWITCH Issued 11/30/87
(Non-Turbo) Revised
DESCRIPTION

If you install the current cluster switch (P/N FB01 66 170) on the vehicles within the VIN range shown below, a short circuit may occur when the light switch is turned on. This will cause an open circuit in the internal circuit of the light switch, resulting in inoperative headlamps.

If you replace the cluster switch of the affected vehicles, you are requested to follow the replacement procedure shown in this service bulletin.

VIN RANGE OF AFFECTED VEHICLES

1986 RX-7 (Non-Turbo): JM1FC331 G0100001 - 108116 (Prior to October 3, 1985)

NOTE:
For vehicles not within the above VIN range and with two (2) RG wires (red with green stripe) installed in the 14-pin connector of the light switch cluster assembly sub-harness, the same procedure should be followed to replace the cluster switch.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

When you replace the cluster switch assembly or the light switch assembly, proceed as follows:

1. Replace the light switch sub-harness (P/N FB01 66 167) at the same time as replacing the cluster switch assembly or the light switch assembly.

2. If you do not replace the light switch sub-harness, cut off the RG wire to the 14-pin connector as shown in the illustration below. Then, wrap the wire with vinyl tape to prevent short circuiting.

NOTE:
Two (2) RG wires are installed. Be careful not to cut the wrong one.

3. After the replacement or repair, confirm that the headlamps are on.
