DESCRIPTION

If you encounter a 323 with a damaged or seized camshaft etc., please check the engine oil to determine if the oil has deteriorated. In severe cases, the oil may have become muddy or sludged, resulting in a restriction of the engine oil flow to the camshaft.

To reduce the possibility of engine oil deterioration, the crank case ventilation system in the cylinder head cover has been improved since May, 1988 production. Still, changing oil at the prescribed intervals is mandatory to prevent oil deterioration.

IMPORTANT: The following information should be recommended to the customer to prevent engine damage due to sludge build-up.

1). Use good quality SF multi-grade engine oil. 2). Change oil periodically at the interval described in the Owner's Manual.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Check the camshaft, cylinder head and related parts according to the workshop manual and replace them if necessary.

2. Remove the oil pan and inspect the oil strainer. If the oil strainer is restricted due to oil sludge, clean or replace it. (P/N B630 14 240E).

3. Clean the oil control plug and the oil passages.

4. Replace the cylinder head cover with a modified one and replace the PCV valve.
