Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Description and Operation

Fig. 73 Intake air system. Turbo:

The ``twin-scroll'' turbocharger system, Fig. 1, is available on 1987-88 RX-7 models. The system consists of the turbocharger, intercooler, waste gate valve and actuator, switching valve, solenoid valve, check valve and EGI control unit.
The turbocharger utilizes the energy of the exhaust gas to pressurize the intake air and therefore supplies more than the normal amount of air to the combustion chamber. As a result of the more fully charged combustion chamber, a higher output and higher torque can be obtained by a turbocharged engine as compared to a normally aspirated engine. The waste gate valve and actuator control the amount of gas acting on the turbine wheel, corresponding to turbocharger boost pressure.
