DESCRIPTION
There is a possibility that the four (4) nuts that secure the air cleaner to the air flow meter may loosen and enter the engine, resulting in engine damage.
For this reason, you are requested to check 1988 323 vehicles listed below in your dealer inventory and at any service and repair according to the procedures shown in this bulletin.

NOTE:
Vehicles within the above VIN range with a white "X" mark on the top cover of the air cleaner have already been repaired.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the connector to the ignition coil.
2. For Turbo only: Disconnect the connector to the air flow meter and loosen the tiewrap to the harness.
3. Disconnect the radiator overflow hose from the air cleaner body.
4. Remove 4 bolts to the air cleaner cover and the bolt to the ground wire.
5. Lift up the air cleaner cover. Remove 4 nuts attaching the air cleaner cover to the air flow meter. Apply locking agent to the threads of the air flow meter.
Recommended locking agent:
LOCKTITE 222, 242, 262 THREEBOND 1305, 1324, 1374
6. Reinstall the 4 nuts and torque to specification.
Tightening torque: 8 ft.lbs., 96 in.lbs.
7. Reinstall the air cleaner in the reverse order of disassembly.
8. Mark a white "X" on the air cleaner top cover to indicate the repair has been completed.
NOTE:
If any of the 4 nuts securing the air cleaner to the air flow meter cannot be found, perform the following:
Non-Turbo:
Check the air duct between the air flow meter and throttle body for the missing nuts. Turbo:
Check the duct between the air flow meter and turbo for the missing nuts. Check the turbo vanes for damage.
