Fuel Pump: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 31 Connecting jumper wire to fuel pump check connector.:

1. Check fuel pump pressure as follows:
a. Connect terminals of yellow check connector, Fig. 31.
b. Turn ignition switch to On position.
2. If there is no pressure, check fuel pump operation as follows:
a. Connect jumper wire to yellow check connector, Fig. 31.
b. Open fuel tank lid and remove fuel filler cap.
c. Turn ignition switch to On position and listen for fuel pump operation.
d. If operating sound can not be heard, check voltage at fuel pump connector. If voltage is 12 volts, replace fuel pump.
3. If fuel pressure is low, check fuel pump feeding capacity as follows:
a. Start engine, then disconnect circuit opening relay connector.
b. After engine stalls, turn ignition switch to Off position.
c. Connect circuit opening relay connector.
d. Connect jumper wire to yellow check connector, Fig. 31.
e. Disconnect fuel return hose from fuel return pipe (sedan) or pressure regulator (station wagon).
f. Turn ignition switch to On position for 10 seconds and check feeding capacity. If capacity is not 13.4-23.2 cubic inches per 10 seconds at 36.3 psi, check fuel filter and fuel line.
4. If fuel pressure is too high, replace fuel pump.
