Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


STATION WAGON




1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly, then disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
3. Disconnect shift cable and engine ground wire from transaxle.
4. Remove water hose bracket and vacuum line brackets from transaxle.
5. Remove wiring harness clip, then disconnect harness connectors from transaxle.
6. Remove two upper transaxle attaching bolts, then disconnect electrical connector from neutral safety switch.
7. Disconnect vacuum line from vacuum diaphragm.
8. Disconnect and plug transaxle oil cooler lines.
9. Install engine support No. 49 E301 .025A or equivalent to engine hanger and engine.
10. Raise and support vehicle.
11. Drain transaxle fluid, then remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
12. Remove transaxle under cover and side covers.
13. Remove lower ball joint-to-steering knuckle attaching bolt, then separate lower arm from knuckle on both sides of vehicle.
14. Carefully separate driveshaft from transaxle using a pry bar between shaft and case.
15. Remove suspension crossmember attaching bolts and the crossmember.
16. Remove starter motor attaching bolts and the starter motor.
17. Remove end plate, then the torque converter attaching bolts.
18. Loosen engine support hook bolt to lean engine toward transaxle.
19. Support transaxle with a suitable jack, then remove remaining transaxle attaching bolts and lower assembly from vehicle.
20. Reverse procedure to install. Note the following torques: transaxle attaching bolts, 47-66 ft.lbs.; torque converter to drive plate bolts, 25-36 ft.lbs.; starter bolts, 23-34 ft.lbs.; suspension crossmember bolts except at engine mount, 47-66 ft.lbs.; suspension crossmember bolts at engine mount, 21-34 ft.lbs. lower ball joint bolt, 32-40 ft.lbs.; mounting block nuts, 17-22 ft.lbs.




SEDAN

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle and drain transaxle fluid.
2. Disconnect distributor lead.
3. Disconnect air flow meter connector and remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect speedometer and throttle cables.
5. Disconnect connectors at inhibitor switch and OD release solenoid, then the grounds from transaxle case.
6. Remove selector case, then the heater pipe.
7. Disconnect oil hose from transaxle and plug end of hose.
8. Suspend engine using tool 49G0175A0 or equivalent.
9. Remove front wheels, then the splash shields and under cover.
10. Remove stabilizer bar control link.
11. Remove bolts and nuts at left and right lower arm ball joints.
12. Pull lower arms downward to separate them from knuckles. Do not damage ball joint dust boots.
13. Separate left driveshaft from transaxle by prying with bar inserted between shaft and case. Do not damage oil seal.
14. Install tool 49B027006 or equivalent into differential side gear.
15. Separate right driveshaft from transaxle, then remove starter.
16. Remove No. 2 engine mount, then the crossmember.
17. Remove gusset plates and end plate, then the torque converter bolts.
18. Lean engine toward transaxle by loosening engine support hook bolt.
19. Support transaxle with suitable jack, then remove transaxle mounting bolts and the transaxle.
20. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following torques:
a. Transaxle mounting bolts, 41-59 ft.lbs.
b. Torque converter bolts, 25-36 ft.lbs.
c. End plates, 61-87 inch lbs.
d. Gusset plate, 27-38 ft.lbs.
e. Crossmember to frame, 47-66 ft.lbs.; to number to mount, 49-67 ft.lbs.; to other mount 21-34 ft.lbs.
f. Starter, 23-34 ft.lbs.
g. Dynamic damper bracket to engine, 23-34 ft.lbs.; to starter bracket, 14-19 ft.lbs.
h. Lower arm ball joint to knuckle, 32-40 ft.lbs.
i. Stabilizer bar control link, 9-13 ft.lbs.
j. Splash shield and under cover, 69-95 inch lbs.
k. Lug nuts, 65-87 ft.lbs.
l. Shock absorber mounting block, 22-27 ft.lbs.
m. Selector cable topmost bolt, 33-47 ft.lbs.; center two bolts, 69-95 inch lbs.; bottommost bolt, 23-34 ft.lbs.
n. Air cleaner assembly bolt, 23-30 ft.lbs.; nut, 69-95 inch lbs.
