Fig. 21 Manual linkage adjustment. 1984-86 626, 1986-87 323 sedan & 1987-88 323 station wagon:





1. Apply parking brake, then loosen locknuts ``A'' and ``B'', Fig. 21.




2. Move gearshift selector lever and lever on transaxle to ``N'' position on all models exc. 1986 626 or ``P'' position on 1986 626.
3. Turn locknut ``A'' until it just contacts T-joint.
4. On 1986 626, back off locknut ``A'' one full turn.
5. On all models, torque locknut ``B'' to approximately 8 ft.lbs.
6. On all models exc. 1986 626 and 1987-88 323 station wagon, proceed as follows:
a. Depress selector lever knob, then move lever to ``P'' position and note amount of travel.
b. Pull select lever to ``D'' position and note amount of travel from ``N''.
c. Adjust locknuts as necessary to equalize dimensions noted in steps a and b.
d. Ensure proper operation of selector lever.
7. On 1987 626, proceed as follows:
a. Ensure click is heard in each range from ``P'' to ``1''.
b. Ensure positions of selector lever and indicator are exact.
c. Ensure selector button returns smoothly. Replace spring as required.
8. On 1987-88 323 station wagon, proceed as follows:
a. Depress selector lever knob, then move lever to ``R'' position and note amount of travel.
b. Pull select lever to ``D'' position and note amount of travel from ``N''.
c. Adjust locknuts as necessary to equalize dimensions noted in steps a and b.
d. Ensure proper operation of selector lever.
