Engine Replace


1. Release fuel pressure as follows:
a. Start engine and disconnect circuit opening relay.
b. After engine stalls, turn ignition switch to Off.
c. Reconnect circuit opening relay.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine oil and coolant.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly and disconnect coil high tension wire.
4. Disconnect accelerator cable and, on automatic transaxle models, the throttle cable.
5. Disconnect fuel hoses as necessary, covering them with rag to prevent spillage, then plug hoses to prevent leakage.
6. Disconnect upper radiator hose at engine and, on automatic transaxle models, the transaxle coolant lines.
7. Disconnect radiator electrical harness, then remove radiator and electric cooling fan.
8. On turbo models, remove intercooler pipe and hose, covering openings to prevent entry of dirt.
9. On all models, disconnect electrical connectors for heat gage unit and water thermo switch.
10. Disconnect EGI and engine harnesses, then the brake vacuum hose.
11. Remove three way solenoid assembly and, on turbo models, the EGR solenoid assembly.
12. Disconnect canister and heater hoses, then the transaxle harness and speedometer cable.
13. On manual transaxle models, remove clutch release cylinder, leaving pipe connected, and position out of way.
14. On automatic transaxle models, disconnect transmission control cable.
15. On all models, remove fan belt.
16. Remove A/C compressor with bracket and the power steering pump, leaving hoses connected, and position out of way.
17. Remove engine side cover and the front wheel assemblies.
18. Disconnect tie rod end, stabilizer control rod and lower arm bushing.
19. Disconnect driveshafts at transaxle, using pry bar as necessary. Do not damage boot or oil seal. Depending on application, install tool 49G027003 or 49G030455, or equivalent, into transaxle to hold side gear.
20. On manual transaxle models, disconnect change rod and extension bar.
21. On all models, disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold.
22. Remove left side engine mount, then the engine/transaxle assembly.
23. Reverse procedure to install.
