Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

1. Remove axle hub in numerical sequence, Fig. 12, noting the following:
a. Uncrimp tab of locknut.
b. Remove caliper assembly, leaving hose attached, and suspend out of way.
c. Use tool 490118850C or equivalent to disconnect tie rod end.

2. Disassemble axle hub in numerical sequence, Fig 13, noting the following:
a. Use tool 49G033102, 49G033104 and 49G033106, or equivalents, to press off front wheel hub.
b. If bearing inner race remains on front wheel hub, grind a section of bearing inner race to approximately .0197 inch (.5 mm), then remove with chisel.
c. Using tools mentioned in step a, press out front wheel bearing.
3. Check knuckle for cracks or damage, replacing as necessary.
4. Check front wheel hub for seizure, cracks or damage, replacing as necessary.
5. Check dust cover for cracks or damage, replacing as necessary.
6. Assemble hub and bearing assembly as follows:
a. Install new hub bolts.
b. Using tool 49G033107 or equivalent, press in new dust cover.
c. Using tools 49G030797 and 49F027007, or equivalents, press in new front wheel bearing.
d. Install retaining ring.
e. Using to 49V001795 or equivalent, install new oil seal, then apply grease to oil seal lip.
f. Using tools 49G033106 and 49H026103, or equivalents, install front wheel hub.
7. Reverse removal procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque knuckle to shock absorber bolt to 69-86 ft.lbs.
b. Torque lower arm ball joint attaching nut to 32-40 ft.lbs.
c. Torque stabilizer link nut to 12-17 ft.lbs. and ensure .79 inch (20.2 mm) of thread is exposed.
d. Torque wheel speed sensor to 12-17 ft.lbs.
e. Torque tie rod end nut to 22-33 ft.lbs.
f. Ensure endplay does not exceed .0079 inch (.2 mm).
g. Torque caliper attaching bolts to 58-72 ft.lbs.
h. Torque lug nuts to 65-87 ft.lbs.
