NOTE:
Refer to Mazda 626 Workshop Manual, Section 14 (1162-10-87D).
1) Remove the back window upper molding.
2) Remove the upper molding joints.
3) Remove the rear wiper arm and blade.
4) Remove the strap hangers.
5) Remove the rear hatch side trim.
6) Remove the rear hatch upper trim.
7) Remove the rear hatch lower trim.
8) Disconnect the rear defrost connectors.
2. Remove the rear hatch glass.
1) Remove the back window lower molding mounting nuts.
2) Cut the seal from the back window side molding with a razor knife.
3) Make a hole through the sealant with an awl.
4) Pass piano wire through the hole. (Length of piano wire: approx. 40 cm or 15.75 in.).
5) Wrap each end of the piano wire around a bar.
6) Hold the bars, and then "saw" the sealant from around the glass.
CAUTION:
a. Use a long sawing action to spread the work over the whole length of wire to prevent it from breaking.
b. Be careful that the wire does not rub on the painted body surfaces.
c. Use a razor knife to cut places that the piano wire will not cut.
7) Remove the glass.
3. Remove the back window side molding.
1) Remove the remaining sealant from the glass with a razor knife.
2) Cut the sealant between the glass and back window side molding (passenger compartment side).
CAUTION:
Do not damage the ceramic paint on the glass.
3) Pull off the glass side moldings. Cut the remaining sealant as necessary.
4. Remove the back window lower molding.
1) Remove the remaining sealant from the lower molding and glass with a razor knife.
2) Cut the sealant between the glass and the lower molding (passenger compartment side).
3) Lift the lower molding near the stud bolt with pliers. Pry the molding up with a screwdriver.
4) Remove the lower molding, cutting the sealant with a razor knife where necessary.
1. Install the back window side and lower moldings.
1) Use a razor knife to trim and smooth the remaining sealant on the body and glass. Leave a 1 - 2 mm (0.04 - 0.08 in.) layer of sealant.
CAUTION:
a. If some sealant flakes off, apply primer, let it dry, and then use new sealant to patch it.
b. Do not damage the ceramic paint on the glass.
2) Carefully clean around the edge of the glass (to approx. 50 mm or 1.97 in. from the edge) and the adhesion surface at the body side, and moldings.
3) Apply primer with a brush to the bonding area of the glass, moldings, and body, and let it air-dry for approximately 30 minutes.
CAUTION:
Be sure not to allow dirt, water, oil, or similar materials to come into contact with the primered surfaces, and do not touch them by hand.
4) After the primer has dried, lay a continuous 3 mm (0.12 in.) high bead of repair seal (B001 77 739) in the lower and side moldings.
CAUTION:
a. Cut nozzle of the repair seal cartridge as illustrated in the figure.
b. If necessary, smooth the repair seal to correct any irregularities.
5) Align the lower molding edge with the glass corner and push the lower molding into place.
6) Engage the glass side molding end with the lower molding, and push the side molding into place.
CAUTION:
a. Do not bend the molding while installing them.
b. Do not apply excessive pressure to the side of the glass.
2. Install the rear hatch glass.
1) Bond a dam around the circumference of the glass as shown in the figure.
CAUTION:
Be sure the dam is installed straight and securely.
2) Apply an 11 mm (0.43 in.) thick bead of repair seal (B001 77 739) around the periphery of the glass along the outside of the dam with a sealant gun.
CAUTION:
a. Cut the nozzle of the repair seal cartridge as illustrated in the figure.
b. If necessary, smooth the repair seal to correct any irregularities.
3) Align the stud of the previously installed glass lower molding with the rear hatch body and mount the glass.
4) Push the glass securely into the rear hatch body. Allow the sealant to set a few minutes.
5) Install the window clips in the glass side moldings.
6) Tighten the glass lower molding mounting nuts. Tightening torque:
9 - 13 N-m (0.9 - 1.3 m-Kg, 7 - 9 ft-lbs)
7) Remove any excess repair seal. Add sealant where necessary.
NOTE:
a. Leave the rear hatch open until the repair seal hardens.
b. Hardening time of repair seal:
