1988 626 WATER LEAKAGE FROM MOUNTING Issued 10/29/87
(4-Door Sedan) OF REAR COMBINATION LAMP Revised
DESCRIPTION
There is a possibility that some 1988 626 4-Door Sedans have improper sealing around the mounting of the rear combination lamps. The results may be water leakage in the lamps or the luggage compartment when it rains or while washing the car.
If a customer reports such leakage, you are kindly requested to disassemble the rear combination lamps and install a gasket following the procedure in this bulletin..
To prevent this leaking condition, sealing has been changed from butyl to gasket since August 1, 1987.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
I. Disassembly of Rear Combination Lamp
NOTE:
To access rear combination lamp, first open trunk and detach end of carpet at Velcro. Lift up carpet at two rivets to unhook from wall of trunk.
1) Remove harness clip from rear combination lamp.
2) Remove harness coupler from rear combination lamp.
3) Remove four (4) nuts holding assembly.
II. Removal of Rear Combination Lamp
1) Remove rear combination lamp.
NOTE:
a) Push on the luggage compartment side of the lamp assembly until you can grip the assembly securely from outside at points A and B as shown in the illustration. At this time, pull back evenly while gripping at points A and B to prevent deforming the mounting holes in the body.
b) Once lamp begins to pull away from the body, dip your hands in water to prevent butyl from sticking to you.
III. Removal of Butyl Sealant
1) When you pull the lamp assembly to a certain point, the butyl stretches and may become stringy as shown in the illustration above. Therefore, break the butyl off by hand.
2) Please completely remove the remaining butyl from the body and lamp.
NOTE:
a) It is easier to remove the remaining butyl by using a wad of the butyl already removed.
b) Be careful not to stick or smear butyl on lamp, socket cover, bulbs, body, etc. while butyl is being removed.
IV. Installation of Gasket
1) Install the gasket on the lamp after the butyl is completely removed. Position the gasket properly over the mounting studs and then press the gasket fully onto the (trunk side) surface of the lamp housing.
V. Installation of Rear Combination Lamp
1) Install the lamp housing on the vehicle in reverse order of disassembly.
2) After installation of lamp, inspect the bulbs for proper operation and look for signs of water leakage.
