Turbocharger: Description and Operation
Fig. 4 Turbocharger System Component Description:
The turbocharger system used on some 1986-88 626 and 1988 MX-6 models comprise of the turbocharger, wastegate valve and actuator, pressure switch, warning buzzer, indicator light and the fuel injection control unit.
The turbocharger assembly utilizes the energy of the exhaust gasses to pressurize the intake air, which supplies more than the normal amount of air to the combustion chamber. As a result of the increased charged, a higher output and torque can be obtained.
The wastegate valve and actuator control the amount of exhaust gas acting on the turbine wheel, corresponding to a turbocharged boost pressure. To prevent the vehicle from operating with the pressure (boost pressure) of the intake air at 11 psi or higher, an indicator light flashes, corresponding to the signal from the fuel injection control unit, indicating the over boost condition to the vehicle operator.
