Air Flow Meter - Nuts May Fall Into Engine

DESCRIPTION

There is a possibility that the four (4) nuts that secure the air cleaner to the air flow meter may loosen and enter the engine, resulting in engine damage.

For this reason, you are requested to check all 1988 626 and MX-6 vehicles in the dealer inventory and at any service according to the repair procedure shown in this bulletin.

NOTE:

Vehicles within the above VIN range with the following mark have already been repaired.

^ White "X" or white circle mark on top cover of the air cleaner.

The revised section is indicated by an asterisk. Please replace the original bulletin with this revised bulletin.
REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the air flow meter connector.
3. Remove 5 bolts to the air cleaner top cover and 1 nut on the air flow meter bracket. Remove the vacuum hose from the air cleaner (Turbo model only).
4. Lift up the air cleaner top cover from the air cleaner body.
5. Loosen the 4 nuts securing the air cleaner top cover to the air flow meter and separate the air cleaner top cover from the air flow meter.
6. Be sure to check that the gasket is aligned with dowel pins of the air cleaner top cover.
7. Apply locking agent to the threads on the air flow meter. (Never apply it excessively as it may damage the air cleaner cover.)

Recommended locking agent: LOCKTITE 222, 242, 262 THREEBOND 1305, 1324, 1374

8. Reinstall the 4 nuts and torque to specification. Tightening torque: 8 ft.lb., 96 in.lb.
9. Reinstall the air cleaner top cover and nut to the air flow meter bracket. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the air cleaner (Turbo model only).
10. Reconnect the air flow meter connector. Be sure to check that the wire clip of connector is securely fitted in the connector groove.
11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
12. Mark a white "X" on the air cleaner top cover to indicate that the repair has been completed.
NOTE:

If any of the four nuts securing the air cleaner to the air flow meter or spacers beneath them cannot be found, perform the following:

Non-Turbo: Check the air duct and resonance chamber No. 2 for the missing nuts.
Turbo: Check the duct between the air flow meter and turbo also the intercooler for the missing nuts. Check the turbo vanes for damage.
