Wheel Hub: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle and remove front wheel.
2. Remove caliper assembly, leaving brake hose attached, and suspend out of way.
3. Remove hub cap, then the locknut and washer.
4. Remove disc plate, then the dust cover.
5. Remove wheel speed sensor.
6. Remove cotter pin and nut, then, using tool 490118850C or equivalent, separate tie rod end from knuckle. If removal is difficult, lightly tap ball joint coupling of knuckle with a hammer.
7. Separate knuckle arm from knuckle spindle, then remove knuckle spindle.
8. Drive off knuckle arm.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove oil seal, then, using tool 490839425C or equivalent, the sensor rotor. Do not remove sensor rotor unless necessary. Do not reuse sensor rotor once removed.
2. Remove retaining ring.
3. Using tools 49B001797, 49H033101 and 49H026103, or equivalents, press out front wheel bearing. Do not reuse front wheel bearing.
4. Drive out wheel hub bolts. Do not remove hub bolts unless necessary. Do not reuse bolts once removed.
INSPECTION
1. Check hub and sensor rotor for cracks or damage, replacing as necessary.
2. Check knuckle spindle for cracks or damage, and the oil seal friction surface for wear or rust, replacing as necessary.
3. Check knuckle and knuckle arm for damage, replacing as necessary.
4. Check dust cover and hub cap for damage, replacing as necessary.
ASSEMBLY
1. Using suitable pipe and press, install new hub bolts.
2. Using tool 49H026101A or equivalent, install new sensor rotor.
3. Using tools 49B001797, 49F027007 and 49H026103, or equivalents, press in new front wheel bearing, then install retaining ring.
4. Using tool 49V001795 or equivalent, drive in new oil seal, then apply grease to oil seal lip.
INSTALLATION
1. Install knuckle arm, torquing nut to 69-91 ft.lbs., then install new cotter pin.
2. Install knuckle spindle to shock absorber, torquing bolts to 69-86 ft.lbs.
3. Install knuckle arm to tie rod end, torquing nut to 22-33 ft.lbs.
4. Install knuckle arm to knuckle spindle, torquing bolt to 75-101 ft.lbs.
5. Install dust cover, torquing bolts to 12-17 ft.lbs.
6. Install disc plate, torquing nut to 72-130 ft.lbs., then ensure endplay does not exceed .002 inch (.05 mm).
7. Stake locknut to groove and install hub cap.
8. Install wheel speed sensor, torquing bolt to 12-17 ft.lbs.
9. Install caliper assembly, torquing bolts to 58-86 ft.lbs.
10. Install wheel, torquing lug nuts to 65-87 ft.lbs.
