Variable Resonance Induction System (VRIS)

SYSTEM INSPECTION

1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature and run it at idle.

Shutter Valve Actuator Protector Removal:

2. Remove the protector from the shutter valve actuator.
3. Check that the shutter valve actuator rod extends at idle.

Shutter Valve Actuator Rod Extension:

4. Gradually increase the engine speed, and check that the rod is pulled into the shutter valve actuator above approx. 3,700 rpm.

Shutter Valve Actuator Rod Extension:

5. Continue to increase the engine speed and check that the rod again extends above approx. 5,750 rpm.

VACUUM SIGNAL

1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the shutter valve actuator.

Shutter Valve Actuator Vacuum Source:

2. Place a finger over the hose opening, and check that no vacuum is felt at idle.
3. Increase the engine speed, and check that vacuum is felt between 3,700 rpm and 5,750 rpm.
4. Connect the vacuum hose to the actuator.

ELECTRICAL SIGNAL

Shutter Valve Actuator Voltmeter Connection:

1. Connect a voltmeter to the solenoid valve (Br/W)(VRIS).
2. Check the voltmeter reading as described below.

ENGINE SPEED VOLTMETER READING

Below 3,700 rpm Approx. 12 volts
3,700-5,750 rpm Below 2.0 volts
Above 5,750 rpm Approx. 12 volts

3. Disconnect the voltmeter.

SOLENOID VALVE (VRIS)

1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the solenoid valve (Black).

Solenoid Valve -- No Voltage Applied:

2. Blow through the solenoid valve from hose "B" and check that air flows from the air filter.

Solenoid Valve -- Voltage Applied:

3. Disconnect the solenoid valve connector and connect 12 volts and a ground to the terminals of the solenoid valve.
4. Blow through the solenoid valve from hose "B" and check that air flows from port "A".

SHUTTER VALVE ACTUATOR

Shutter Valve Actuator Removal:

1. Remove the shutter valve protective cover.
2. Remove the linkage "C" clip.
3. Remove the vacuum hose.
4. Remove the mounting nuts.
5. Remove the shutter valve actuator.

Shutter Valve Actuator Vacuum Test:

6. Connect a vacuum pump tester to the actuator.
7. Apply vacuum and check that the rod is pulled into the actuator.
8. Replace if necessary.
9. Install the actuator in the reverse order of removal.

SHUTTER VALVE

1. Remove the shutter valve protective cover.
2. Remove the linkage "C" clip.
3. Remove the vacuum hose.
4. Remove the mounting nuts.
5. Remove the shutter valve actuator.

Shutter Valve Rod Movement:

6. Check that the shutter valve moves smoothly.
7. Replace if necessary.
8. Install the actuator in the reverse order of removal.

CHECK VALVE

1. Remove the check valve.

Check Valve:

2. Blow through "A" and check that air flows from "B".
3. Blow through "B" and check that air does not flow from "B".

VACUUM CHAMBER

Vacuum Chamber:

1. Visually check the vacuum chamber for clogging, damage, or cracks.
2. Replace the air duct assembly, if necessary.
