Fuel Transfer Pump (Models W/4 Wheel Steering Only)

Removing Rear Seat Cushion:

1. Remove the rear seat.

2. Remove the fuel filler cap.

3. Turn the ignition "ON" and wait ten seconds.

4. Listen at the fuel filler for the sound of the fuel transfer pump running. If you hear a pump running, it is the transfer pump. The main fuel pump does not begin to run until the engine is cranked.

NOTE: Be sure there is enough fuel in the tank for the transfer pump to operate (one third full is recommended).

If you can hear the pump running, pump is OK. If no sound is heard, continue testing.

Checking Voltage At Transfer Pump Connector:

5. Check the voltage (ignition "ON") at the transfer pump connector while connected (probe the back of the connector halves). Voltage should be as listed below.

WIRE COLOR CODE - VOLTAGE

White/Green - 12 volts
White/Green - 12 volts
Black - 0 volts (grnd)
Black - 0 volts (grnd)
White/Black - greater than 1.5 volts

If voltages are correct and pump does not run, replace pump.

If the voltage at the W/R wire terminal is zero, check for continuity to ground through the pump side of connector at that terminal. If terminal is grounded, float switch is shorted. Replace pump assembly W/float switch.

If other voltages are not correct, continue testing.

6. Disconnect transfer pump connector and check voltage at harness side of connector. Voltages should be as listed below.

WIRE COLOR CODE - VOLTAGE

White/Green - 12 volts
White/Green - 12 volts
Black - 0 volts (grnd)
Black - 0 volts (grnd)
White/Black - greater than 1.5 volts

If voltages are correct, replace pump assembly.

If voltages are not correct, check fuel pump control unit.
