Excessive Emissions or Odors
Definition: Vehicle fails an emission test. Vehicle has excessive "rotten egg" smell. Excessive odors do not necessarily indicate excessive emissions.
POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION
Incorrect idle speed Check and adjust idle speed
Proceed to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES
Fuel in crankcase Determine cause (flooding, excessive cranking etc.)
Change oil and filter
Incorrect air/fuel ratio Check air/fuel ratio, Refer to
COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS,
check fuel pressure
Faulty fuel cap Replace fuel cap
Lead contamination Check for missing fill pipe restrictor
of catalytic converter Replace catalytic converter
Poor or contaminated fuel [1] Check for excessive alcohol content
Drain fuel tank and add clean fuel
Leaking fuel injector(s) - Poor injector spray pattern See FUEL INJECTORS under COMPONENT TESTING
[1] Mazda reccommends the use of UNLEADED REGULAR gasoline only, in all vehicles not equipped with a turbocharger. Do not use, or reccommend for use, any higher octane fuels. Starting, idle, and driveability problems may result. See factory Technical Service Bullitin #054/89, titled "USE OF REGULAR UNLEADED GASOLINE".
