Lack of Power, Sluggish


Definition: Engine delivers less than expected power. Little or no increase in speed, when accelerator pedal is pushed down part way.

POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION

Contaminated fuel [1] Drain fuel tank and add clean fuel

Lead contamination Check for missing fill pipe restrictor
of catalytic converter Replace catalytic converter

Low fuel pressure See FUEL PUMP AND PRESSURE REGULATOR (SYSTEM PRESSURE CHECKS) under COMPONENT TESTING

Pinched or collapsed fuel hose/line Repair/replace as required

Throttle valve not fully opening Check accelerator pedal travel
(Floor mat/carpet interference)
Check throttle cable adjustment
Proceed to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES

Dirty air filter Clean or replace

Plugged or restricted fuel injector(s) See FUEL INJECTORS under COMPONENT TESTING
Poor injector spray pattern


[1] Mazda reccommends the use of UNLEADED REGULAR gasoline only, in all vehicles not equipped with a turbocharger. Do not use, or reccommend for use, any higher octane fuels.
