Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Disconnect the throttle sensor connector.

Adjusting Throttle Sensor:





3. Remove the throttle sensor mounting screws and remove the throttle sensor.
4. Clean the mounting area of any contaminants and install the throttle sensor on the throttle shaft. Install the mounting screws.
5. Install the adapter harness (Mazda Part# 49 G018901) between the throttle sensor and the wiring harness.

Caution: Use a precision voltmeter with a scale of 0.01 volts to inspect or adjust the throttle sensor.

6. Remove the air hose from the throttle body.
7. Turn the ignition switch on.
8. Make sure that the throttle valve is fully closed.

Testing Voltage:





9. Measure the RED wire voltage and record it.
10. Check the BLUE wire voltage.
11. Loosen the throttle sensor mounting screws.

Test Harness Connected:





12. Turn the throttle sensor to adjust BLUE wire voltage within the range specified for the recorded RED wire voltage.

Terminal Specifications:






13. Tighten the throttle sensor mounting screws.
14. Recheck that the BLUE wire voltage is specifications, as indicated below.

15. Hold the throttle valve fully open and check that the BLUE wire voltage is within specifications, as indicated above.


16. Check that the BLUE wire voltage increases smoothly when opening the throttle valve from closed to fully open.
17. If not correct, replace the throttle sensor.
18. Turn the ignition off.
19. Disconnect the adapter harness and reconnect the throttle sensor connector.
20. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and depress the brake pedal for at least 5 seconds to eliminate the control unit malfunction memory.
