Subject:
BRAKE PULSATION/JUDDER
DESCRIPTION
When applying the brakes on some 1988-'91 929 models, pulsation/judder may be felt through the brake pedal. This is caused when the brake pad is applied to an uneven rotor surface. A new material brake pad which reduces rotor surface wear has been used in production of 1992 929 models.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1988-'91 models within the VIN range below that experience brake pulsation/judder should be inspected for uneven rotor surtace or excessive rotor runout.
If you find that the surface is uneven and no other problems exist, determine whether the surface can be machined to bring the rotor back to within specification, if not replace the rotor.
NOTE:
Rotors should only be replaced if cracks are present or if, after machining the surface, the remaining rotor thickness is below the specified limit.
Minimum allowable rotor thickness:
1988 - 1989 929 20 mm (0.79 in)
1990 - 1991 929 16 mm (0.63 in)
After machining or replacement, install new material brake pads according to Workshop Manual instruction (Section 11 or P).
