Subject: FRONT BRAKE NOISE
Applicable Model/s: 1990-'91 MX-5 Miata
Category: P
DESCRIPTION
A groan or squeal may be heard from the front of the vehicle when lightly applying the brakes or braking to a stop. This is caused by the material used in the brake pad manufacturing.
Pads are now manufactured using a new material which reduces brake noise.
Vehicles produced on and after August 1, 1991 use the new material brake pads. Vehicles having this brake noise problem that were produced prior to August 1, 1991 should be fitted with new brake pads.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Inspect the brake system to eliminate all other potential causes of noise.
If you determine that there are no other causes of brake noise, then replace the front pads according to Workshop Manual procedures in Section P.
NOTE:
Many rotors are replaced unnecessarily. Rotors should be replaced if they contain cracks or deep grooves which cannot be removed by machining. Rotors should not be replaced if the thickness of the rotor will allow machining. Minimum allowable rotor thickness is 16.0 mm (0.63 in).
