DESCRIPTION

It has been found that some A/C wire harnesses may have been improperly assembled at the AC-04 connector. This reverses polarity of the diode assembly at the AC-04 connector which causes the additional fan to cycle ON and OFF opposite the compressor clutch and the O.E.M. fan, but does not affect the function of the additional fan during high temperature and pressure situations.

During normal operation of the A/C system, the compressor clutch and the O.E.M. fan should operate and cycle ON and OFF simultaneously. The additional fan should operate only when engine coolant reaches 105~C and discharge pressure in the A/C system reaches 227 P.S.I. or greater.

1990 323 1.8L models with automatic transmission and A/C installed should be checked for proper additional fan operation as follows:

^ Turn ignition key ON
^ Turn A/C and blower switch to OFF position
^ Check additional fan.
^ If additional fan is not operating, the wiring harness is OK.
^ If additional fan is operating, the A/C wiring harness is incorrect and appropriate repair procedures should be taken. It is requested that this function be checked at PDI or the first scheduled maintenance.

The affected wire harnesses were produced before May 9, 1989. Please check the production date located on the identification tag of die wire harness.

REPAIR PROCEDURES

If you encounter the above mentioned improper additional fan operation, the condition of the wire harness can be checked and repaired as follows:
1. Turn the A/C and vehicle power OFF.

2. Disconnect the wire harness from the diode at the AC-04 connector.

3. Disconnect the FAC-02 connector of the A/C harness from the vehicle harness.

4. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between the two connectors at the Black/ Orange striped wire of the FAC-02 connector on the A/C harness and the terminal indicated on the AC-04 connector. If continuity is indicated, the wire harness is OK. If no continuity is indicated, check for continuity between the other terminal of the AC-04 connector and the Black/Orange striped wire terminal of the FAC-02 connector. If continuity is indicated, the wires in the AC-04 connector should be switched in the hardshell connector to correct the malfunction.

5. After switching the wire location in the AC-04 connector, reconnect the harness at both locations and verify proper operation of the A/C system and the additional fan.
