Excessive Emissions or Odors
***UPDATED BY TSB #405489 DATED FEB. 20, 1989Mazda recommends the use of UNLEADED REGULAR gasoline only, in all vehicles not equipped with a turbocharger, unless otherwise specified. Do not use, or recommend for use, any higher octane fuels. Starting, idle, and driveability problems may result. See factory Technical Service Bulletin #405489, titled "USE OF REGULAR UNLEADED GASOLINE".
Definition: Vehicle fails an emission test. Vehicle has excessive "rotten egg" smell. Excessive odors do not necessarily indicate excessive emissions.
POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION
Exhaust manifold leak, or Repair leak, or check emission control systems (air injection system)
fresh air entering exhaust.
near oxygen sensor.
Incorrect idle speed Check and adjust idle speed.
Fuel in crankcase Determine cause (flooding, excessive cranking etc.)
Change oil and filter
Incorrect air/fuel ratio Check fuel pressure.
Also check oxygen sensor and closed loop computer operation.
Faulty fuel cap Replace fuel cap
Lead contamination Check for missing fill pipe restrictor
of catalytic converter Replace catalytic converter
Poor or contaminated fuel Check for excessive alcohol content
Drain fuel tank and add clean fuel
Leaking fuel injector(s) Check fuel injectors
Poor injector spray pattern
