Subject:
OIL SMELL AROUND THE SHIFT LEVER
DESCRIPTION
On some vehicles, oil may seep out of the shift lever, but it may not be visible because the shift lever dust boot covers it. You can detect this condition if the vehicle's cabin smells like oil.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
If the above condition exists, perform the following:
1. Remove the shift lever and rubber boot.
2. Remove the extension housing assembly from the transmission as outlined in Section J of the applicable Workshop Manual.
3. Remove the change control rod and rod cover.
4. To prevent oil moving to the control case side, use a hacksaw (or any applicable cutting tool) to cut the oil seal lip on the front side of the rod cover as shown.
5. Reassemble the transmission assembly.
