AFFECTED VINS

This bulletin applies to 1990-91 323/Protege models with a VIN of JM1BG****M0299590 or lower produced through June 19, 1991.

This bulletin does not apply to 1990-91 323/Protege models with a VIN equal to or greater than JM1BG****M0299591 and produced after June 19, 1991.

DESCRIPTION

A squeal may be heard from the rear brakes. The noise/squeal is characteristic of the material used in manufacturing the brake shoes. The material has been changed and incorporated into production since June 19, 1991.

You can reduce brake noise by replacing the brake shoes with the parts listed below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Confirm your customer's complaint for rear brake noise by operating the vehicle a safe area at 8-10 mph. Apply the hand brake slightly and listen for noise.

2. Replace the rear brake shoes. Refer to Workshop Manual section "P."

3. Be sure to inspect related parts, and machine the drum surface as necessary. Most brake drums DO NOT require replacement. Only drums containing deep grooves or blue (hot) spots should be replaced. Drums not showing these signs should be resurfaced by means of machining as long as the maximum inside diameter is not exceeded.

NOTE:
Maximum allowed drum inside diameter is stamped on the exterior drum surface.
