DESCRIPTION

The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) lights when no fault is present. This may occur because the output voltage of the position sensor of the EGR valve varies. The voltage varies according to the amount of carbon deposited on the seat of the EGR valve.

INSPECTION AND REPAIR PROCEDURE

If you encounter a vehicle with this condition, replace the plate at the position sensor of the EGR valve according to the following procedure.

1. Remove the vacuum hose from the EGR valve. Figure 1

2. Check if the MIL is on when the SST harness (SST/No.: 49-G018-901) is installed and the ignition switch is ON. Figure 2

Next, check each terminal voltage with the chart.

If the MIL is on and/or the voltage between terminals A and C is greater 1.1 V., proceed with the repair procedure.

3. Remove the EGR valve from the engine. For details, see the Workshop Manual, Section F.

4. Loosen the two screws on the position sensor of the EGR valve. Figure 3

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the slots of the screws while removing them.

5. Remove the "O" ring (brown) between the position sensor and the diaphragm case.

6. Remove the dirt between the position sensor and the diaphragm case. Figure 4

7. Install the new "O" ring from the repair kit by sliding it down to the groove on the flange part. Figure 5

NOTE:
When installing the "O" ring, be careful not to twist or otherwise damage it.

8. Install the new plate from the repair kit and reinstall the position sensor on the EGR valve. Figure 6

9. Check the voltage values (see step 2) and compare them with the chart. Also check to see that the MIL is off.

10. Disconnect the SST harness and reconnect the coupler to the sensor.

11. Apply 600 mm Hg of vacuum to the EGR valve with a vacuum tester. Confirm that the valve holds more than 500 mm Hg for longer than one minute. Figure 7

12. Re-install the EGR valve on the engine.

13. Reconnect the vacuum hose.
