1. Check projection of oil control plugs from cylinder head, which should be .209-.224 inch (5.3-5.7mm).
2. Apply engine oil to new O-rings and install oil control plugs.
3. Thoroughly remove all dirt, oil or other material from top of cylinder block.
4. Place new cylinder head gasket on left bank with L mark facing upward.
5. Place a new cylinder head gasket on right bank with R mark facing upward.
6. Install cylinder head to cylinder block.
7. Tighten cylinder head bolts as follows:
a. Measure each bolt length. If length of intake bolts exceeds 4.29 inch (109mm) or length of exhaust bolts exceeds 5.47 inch (139mm), replace them.
b. Apply engine oil to threads and seat faces of bolts.
c. Torque bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 37, 38 and 39 to 14 ft. lbs.
d. Place paint mark on each bolt head.
e. Using paint mark as reference, tighten bolts, in sequence, an additional 90°.
f. Using paint mark as reference, retighten each bolt, in sequence, an additional 90°.
