Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

When troubleshooting shift-lock system, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Automatic Transmission/Transaxle/Shift Interlock.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove selector lever knob, then the front console.
3. Disconnect P range switch connector Fig. 6.
4. Using a suitable ohmmeter, test for continuity as follows:
a. With selector lever in P range and and selector lever button released, continuity should exist.
b. With selector lever in P range and selector lever button depressed, no continuity should exist.
c. With selector lever in R, D, S or L ranges, no continuity should exist.
5. If continuity tests are not to specifications, replace P range switch.

FRONT WHEEL DRIVE

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove selector lever knob, then the front console.
3. Disconnect P range switch connector Fig. 2.
4. Using a suitable ohmmeter, test for continuity as follows:
a. With selector lever in P range and and selector lever button released, continuity should exist.
b. With selector lever in P range and selector lever button depressed, no continuity should exist.
c. With selector lever in R, D, S or L ranges, no continuity should exist.
5. If continuity tests are not to specifications, replace P range switch.
