Subject:
REAR DOOR WEATHER-STRIP BREAKAGE

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
All 1990 - 94 Protege model vehicles.

DESCRIPTION

The rear door weather-strip (left and/or right) is pulled backwards across the sharp corner of the door sash when the door is being closed. Due to the limited clearance between the sash and the body, this action causes the weather-strip to tear or break.

To prevent the weather-strip from moving, double-sided tape will be installed to hold the weather-strip in position on the door sash.

If you receive a customer complaint, have your dealership's body shop follow the instructions below to correct this condition.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the failed weather-strip and discard.
2. Measure the clearance between the door sash and the body as follows:

^ Place a piece of clay on the door sash approximately 40 mm back from the corner of the door. Refer to Fig. 1.

NOTE:
Coat clay with a light coat of oil to prevent sticking.

^ Close door slowly to mold clay into the gap between the door and the sash.

^ Open door and take the measurement as shown.

3. The clearance between the door sash and the body should be 8.5 - 10 mm. If it's not within this specification, adjust the clearance using the door hinge and striker.

4. Apply adhesive to the side and the top inside corner of the weather-strip and install it on the door. Use Three Bond TB1521 or equivalent.

NOTE:
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying adhesive.
