All Wheel Drive
1. Attach engine support, then raise and support vehicle and drain transaxle fluid.2. Remove battery and battery carrier.
3. Disconnect main fuse block and distributor lead.
4. Disconnect air flow meter connector and remove air cleaner assembly.
5. On turbo models, remove intercooler hose, first the intercooler to throttle body hose, then the air cleaner to turbocharger hose.
6. On non-turbo models, remove air cleaner hose and resonance chamber, then the resonance chamber bracket.
7. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle.
8. Disconnect EC-AT connectors at inhibitor switch, solenoid valve, pulse generator and fluid temperature switch.
9. Disconnect grounds from transaxle case.
10. Disconnect selector and throttle cables.
11. Remove front wheels and splash shields.
12. Disconnect oil cooler outlet and inlet hoses.
13. Using tool 490118850C or equivalent, disconnect tie rod ends.
14. Remove stabilizer bar control links.
15. Remove bolts and nuts at left and right lower arm ball joints.
16. Pull lower arms downward to separate them from knuckles. Do not damage ball joint dust boots.
17. Separate left driveshaft from transaxle by prying with a bar inserted between shaft and case. Do not damage oil seal.
18. Remove joint shaft bracket, then separate right driveshaft together with joint shaft in same manner as left driveshaft.
19. Install tool 49G030455 or equivalent into differential side gears.
20. Remove exhaust pipe hanger and gusset plates.
21. Remove undercover, then the torque converter attaching nuts.
22. Remove manifold bracket, then the starter.
23. Suspend engine using tool 49G0175A0 or equivalent.
24. Remove engine mount No. 4 and bracket, then the No. 2 engine mount.
25. Remove crossmember and the left side lower arm as an assembly.
26. Lean engine toward transaxle by loosening engine support hook bolt.
27. Support transaxle with suitable jack, then remove transaxle mounting bolts and the transaxle.
28. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following torques:
a. Transaxle mounting bolts, 66-86 ft. lbs.
b. Engine mount No. 4 bolts, 27-40 ft. lbs.; nuts, 47-66 ft. lbs.
c. Engine mount No. 2 bolt at transaxle, 63-86 ft. lbs.; bolt and nut at frame, 49-69 ft. lbs.
d. Crossmember and left side lower arm assembly bolt, 27-40 ft. lbs.; nut, 55-69 ft. lbs.
e. Starter mounting bolts, 23-34 ft. lbs.; starter wire bracket, 87-104 inch lbs.
f. Manifold bracket nuts, 14-22 ft. lbs.; bolts, 27-38 ft. lbs.
g. End plate, 69-95 inch lbs.
h. Gusset plate, 27-38 ft. lbs.
i. Exhaust pipe hanger, 14-19 ft. lbs.
j. Joint shaft reamer bolts, 61-87 inch lbs.; standard bolts, 31-45 ft. lbs.
k. Lower arm ball joints to knuckles, 32-40 ft. lbs.
l. Stabilizer bar control links, 12-17 ft. lbs. Note that there should be .79 inch (20 mm) of thread exposed.
m. Tie rod ends, 22-30 ft. lbs.
n. Splash shields, 69-95 inch lbs.
o. Lug nuts, 65-87 ft. lbs.
p. Selector cable nut, 22-29 ft. lbs.; bolts, 12-17 ft. lbs.
q. Ground wires, 69-99 inch lbs.
