With Scan Tool

Computerized Engine Control System (EGI):

When problems occur in ECU monitored input devices or output devices, check for the cause with the SST (Mazda Special Service Tool #49 H018 9A1, or equivalent aftermarket "Scan" tool). Using the SST, input and output device failures are retrieved from the ECU as malfunction code numbers. If there are multiple malfunction codes, the lowest number malfunction code is displayed first, followed by subsequent codes in numerical order.

NOTE: The ECU continuously checks for input device malfunctions. However, it only checks for output device malfunctions in a 3 second period after the ignition switch is turned "ON" with test connector grounded.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Warm engine to operating temperature and turn ignition "OFF."

SST Connection:

2. Connect SST to check connector (Green, 6-pin) and negative battery terminal. Set select switch to "A" position.

Grounding Test Connector Pin:

3. Connect a jumper wire between test connector (Green, 1-pin) and a ground.
4. Turn the ignition switch "ON."
5. Check that "88" flashes on the digital display and buzzer sounds for 3 seconds after turning ignition switch "ON."
6. If "88" does not flash, inspect check connector wiring.
7. If "88" flashes and buzzer sounds continuously for more than 20 seconds, check for short circuit between ECU terminal 1F and check connector (Green, 6-pin). Also check the ECU 3X and 3Z terminal voltage. Replace ECU if necessary and repeat previous steps.
8. Check for any malfunction code numbers.
9. Start engine and check for further malfunction code numbers.
10. Note code numbers and check causes by refering to Malfunction Code Charts under DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS. Repair as required.

NOTE: When repairs are completed, cancel malfunction code numbers by performing the after-repair procedure.

AFTER-REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Cancel ECU malfunction code memory by disconnecting the negative battery cable and depressing the brake pedal for at least 5 seconds. Reconnect battery cable.
2. Connect SST to check connector (Green, 6-pin). Set select switch to "A" position.
3. Connect a jumper wire between test connector (Green, 1-pin) and a ground.
4. Turn ignition switch "ON."
5. Verify that no malfunction code numbers are displayed.
6. Start the engine and verify that no malfunction code numbers are displayed.
