Fuel Pump: Description and Operation

Fuel Tank Assembly:

The fuel pump, located in the fuel tank, is a high pressure (71 - 92 psi/490 - 637 kPa) positive displacement electric pump. The pump for turbocharged models puts out slightly higher pressure than for other models, to maintain the correct pressure relationships in the fuel system when the manifold is pressurized and fuel demand is high. It is designed to supply more than the maximum required amount of fuel at slightly higher than required pressure. This is to insure adequate fuel supply and pressure, while fuel circulates constantly through the system and back to the tank.

The pump is installed as part of the fuel gauge unit in the tank, and has a filter screen attached to its inlet to help remove some of the larger particle contaminants.
