SQUEAKING NOISE FROM THE REAR PILLARS

AFFECTED VINS

This bulletin applies to 1992 MX-3 models with a VIN of JM1EC43**N0106221 or lower produced through September 30, 1991.

This bulletin does not apply to 1992 MX-3 models with a VIN equal to or greater than JM1EC43**N0106222 and produced after September 30, 1991.

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may experience a sqeaking noise coming from the rear pillars. This noise is most evident when driving on rough roads or over bumps.

This condition is due to interference between the rear inner pillar and its reinforcement. See figure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Beginning with the October 1, 1991 production date, the clearance between the B-pillar panel and its reinforcement has been increased. This modification eliminates the squeaking noise.

If a vehicle falls within the given VIN range and the squeaking noise occurs, the following repair procedures should be followed:

1. From inside the vehicle, remove the rear inner pillar trims as outlined in Section S of the applicable Workshop Manual.

2. Remove the washer tube clip located in the pillar.

3. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into hole # 1 and bend the rear inner pillar slightly until some clearance exists between the rear inner pillar and the reinforcement.

4. Perform Steps 1 to 3 on both the right and left B-pillars.

5. Apply LPS3 spray grease into hole # 1 for both right and left B-pillars.

NOTE:
Using LPS3 (or equivalent) is strongly recommended because of its characteristic to resist breakdown, especially at temperatures above normal. A lower grade spray grease will "ooze" when subjected to above normal temperatures and mainstain the vehicle's interior parts.

6. Reinstall the washer tube clip and pillar trims.

7. Be sure to wipe off excess lubricant from the affected interior parts.
