APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
1992 MX-3 - Vehicles with a V-6 (1.8 litre) engine and a VIN of JM1EC432*N0100001 through JM1EC432*N0131958.

NOTE:
The asterisk (*) in the VIN range can be any number (0 through 9) or "X".

DESCRIPTION

Excessive oil consumption may occur in some of the above vehicles. This may be caused by a rough machined surface at the base of the exhaust valve. This surface may cause damage to the exhaust valve seal resulting in an oil leak into the combustion chamber.

Exhaust valve production was changed to correct this condition.

NOTE:
A guideline for excessive oil consumption = More than 1 quart (U.S.) every 800 miles (piston engine only).

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the vehicle for oil leaks.

2. If found, repair as necessary. If none are found, proceed to step 3.

3. Visually check spark plugs for signs of oil fouling.

4. If fouling is evident, record the customer's estimation of oil consumption on the repair order and replace the exhaust valves and seals. Follow the instructions in section B of the workshop manual when replacing valves and seals.

NOTE:
Hold original parts at the dealer for possible submission to Mazda Motor of America.
