SEAT BELT RETRACTOR SWITCH

DESCRIPTION
The seat belt warning light may illuminate and/or the buzzer sound. This concern occurs even when the seat belt is latched and functioning properly. A new retractor switch is available to correct this concern.
Customers complaining of this problem should have the vehicle inspected as outlined below and if necessary a new retractor switch installed in accordance with the repair procedure.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Slide rearward and recline both front seats.

2. Sit in the driver's seat and attach each lap belt in the appropriate buckles.

3. Close both front doors and turn the ignition switch ON to ramp the shoulder belt assemblies rearward to the set position.

4. Slowly pull the driver's side belt outward (0.5 inch per second) while observing the warning light. Retract at the same rate of speed and watch the dash warning light for illumination. Repeat three (3) times on each side (drive's and passenger's).

^ If the dash light illuminates (even monetarily) replace the retractor switch as outlined in the Repair Procedure.

^ If the light does not illuminate, refer to the workshop manual, BETM or wring diagram for repair information.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove key from ignition.

2. Remove rear console (arm rest).

3. Disconnect the retractor switch harness and remove connector from bracket.

4. Release shoulder belts from buckles.

5. Pull the driver's side belt out fully.





6. Measure from the retractor and place a piece of masking tape at the appropriate distance. Refer to Fig. 1.

7. Retract the belt to this mark and fix it in place with a binder clip. Refer to Fig. 1.





8. Remove the retractor switch cover, insulator and contact plate.

CAUTION:
DO NOT allow refractor gears to fall out of place. DO NOT touch the contact plate or insulator with your hand. DO NOT allow foreign material to enter refractor assembly.

9. Inspect the contact points for unusual wear or damage.
^ If contacts are badly worn or damage is present, replace the retractor assembly.

^ If no unusual wear or damage is present, the problem may be due to part misalignment. Proceed to step 10.

10. Verify that the seat belts are still fixed in position and assemble the contact plates, insulator and housing.

CAUTION:
Refer to above precautions.

NOTE:
Carefully align parts as shown.

11. Reconnect the retractor switch harness and place connector in bracket.

12. Remove the binder clip and masking tape from seat belt.

13. Reset both belts in appropriate buckles.

14. Verify the repair according to the inspection procedure.
^ If the light does not illuminate, return the vehicle to the customer.
^ If the light illuminates, repeat steps 1 - 14.
