The supplemental inflatable restraint system, Fig. 2, is intended as a supplement to the driver's seat belt.
The supplemental inflatable restraint deploys for the driver when the vehicle is involved in a front end accident of sufficient force.
Restraint is provided by an inflatable cushion stored in the steering wheel module.
